I've made art for as long as I can remember. Art is a vehicle for me to communicate ideas and facilitate ideation. The world is full of objects embedded or imbued with ideas and meaning; a visual language to be deciphered. A short list, detailing the myriad artistic adventures I've traversed, is below to be explored.
(The sections in the list below are also easily found under the main tabs at the top of the site. This is just an outline or map of some of them.)
My painting medium of choice is watercolor. A number of my series have been done on canvas, some as large as 7-feet. These required a platform to sit over top of the painting so they could remain flat on the ground. I enjoy the way watercolor behaves and looks on canvas, but I’ve also worked using standard archival paper (Arches), gesso'd/painted Masonite board, Yupo paper, Mylar and more. Painting series and more about them can be viewed on my painting page.
I've dabbled in many areas of photography including black and white; large format; color film printing; digital; Photoshop editing and manipulation. I found color photography - especially the dark room aspect challenging and rewarding. Working the enlarger in a darkroom always felt painterly to me.
I am not an event photographer. I am drawn more to taking pictures of objects rather than people. Abstraction through the medium interests me.
I also really enjoy photographing my iris flower collection in the garden during the spring each year.

I've enjoyed doing many site-specific projects. I like the challenge and creativity a site can inspire. When given the freedom to alter a space there are usually inspirations and new ideas informed by thinking about how someone will interact and react to the work. I find it helpful to just roll with new ideas, all the while problem-solving, to learn something through the process.
Photographing, growing, and hybridizing iris. A blending of art, science, and gardening. Plus good mental and physical exercise!
I'm approaching this with the attitude of it being a very long-term painting or art project. Essentially, painting with genetics, and learning as much as I can about something I knew nothing about ten years ago. It's been a lot of work, and it's where my focus has gone with my art, and I find it extremely rewarding.
I've always found having a pencil in my hand to be the most natural and easy way for me to create, but at the same time desired to become a painter. I'm not sure you can have the later without first developing the former. I find drawing to be identical to drumming, strangely enough. You always have it, but unless you are using that part of your brain and muscle memory, it can take practice to hone back in on the skill of each craft.
I've done a limited amount of lithography, but it was a good learning experience for developing my drafting skills that translate easily to the medium.
The license plate birdhouses are fun to make, and add some joy and whimsy to the garden that I'm constantly updating with decor. They give my mind a rest and building one is actually meditative. I've never had a bird nest in one, and I see them more as a decorative novelty. It probably doesn’t help that the ones I have kept are close to the busy front door. In addition to the birdhouses, I have made several signs, planter pots, and a few pen/pencil holders with old license plates.
We've all experienced the loss of our favorite furry friends. I've painted several portraits of them for people over the years. I hope they capture a just a glimmer of the essence that once was. It feels good to be able to give that to someone and, in some small way, help that loss.
I've done numerous works of art for my own projects and other bands and design and layout for full albums. I've enjoyed the collaborative atmosphere it takes to make a good piece of art fitting for a certain group of songs.
I like circles and spirals...
These simple creations attempt to blend elements of painting, sculpture, and craft with a conceptual component as well.
It's just fun to paint a rock! Hiding them for others to find and share is great too.
