They are just cool to make. I like doing something with my hands to clear my head and think. These do that for me. They are cathartic and each one is unique with its own little puzzles to solve while being constructed. Several different styles have been tried over time - My favorite being the pagoda roof.
I've made several birdhouses from old plates from a deceased loved one as a memorial. One plate is enough for a memorial birdhouse and looks great for the roof. The houses take 3 plates total to make, but 1 is enough for constructing a memorial house, with 2 extra plates that I have on hand.
I see them more as decorative than functional, but they are sturdy and have held up over the years (the ones I have kept). No wooden frame - everything is held together by bending, just right, and securing pre-drilled holes with sheet metal crews.
For my time involved in each one I have to set the minimum around 50 dollars each.
This page is a gallery for past birdhouses, but many are still available in the store.
SHOUT OUT to my neighbor Kevin for hooking me up with a ton of plates (and bottle caps for some future birdhouses with shingles). Thanks again man!
