Kitty, for Karen Simon (work in progress), (2016) graphite pencil (8 x 6 inches)
Twigs and Twine, (2002) Conté stick (graphite and clay pencil) (24 x 36 inches)
I've done a limited amount of lithography, but what I have done I am proud of, especially the print of Armageddon. It is a smaller version of the larger painting I did at the same period. The drawing was challenging in that the lettering is backwards when you draw onto the lithographic plate with a wax pencil. The pencil markings are also easily made much too dark when drawing with it. I took my time on this piece and was excited when it printed well. I recently found the original litho plate with some prints in storage. I hadn't seen the plate in years.
Many of the lithographic prints end up being one-offs or printing mistakes - the good ones I've often painted on top of with watercolor. In much of my art I find myself correcting what I see as mistakes until it reaches an acceptable completion. I'm glad I learned the lithographic process, but ultimately it was a constraining medium and found that I prefer the spontaneity of painting and photography.
