Many times in life I find myself trying a new thing just to see what it is all about. Then I work with it and see where it goes. You certainly gain something from the procedure of trying something fresh. Applications you didn't realize existed are learned and discovered. Much of it is what I call "side work" consisting of smaller simpler projects. This is to clear my head for bigger more serious projects or for taking a break while working on something larger. I do, however, enjoy tinkering.
When working on large-scale canvases for some of the paintings I've done I always kept smaller canvases to work on in-between. Often, because I was just using these smaller formats for "painting sketches" I have gesso'd over them to reuse again. But, sometimes I have kept these sketches because the spontaneity captured an element which surprised me. Good to always have canvas stretchers built and at-the-ready, became a motto. Also, I tend to find myself working on completely separate or new ideas simultaneously and this is where many of the "things" originate.
Recently, I've been building things with license plates - mainly decorative birdhouses, but also signs and pencil holders. Some cool purses/clutches are hopefully next.
See all the variations of Birdhouses I have built here.
Making something out of a rock turns out to be, perhaps, one of the MOST fun things about the silly pursuit of just making shit.
