My wife is an artist too -- with words. She's a word ninja!
Kathryn is my single greatest supporter in life and of my art. I can't image where I would be without her. She is outspoken, opinionated, and assertive - all qualities I admire. I've never met a woman like her with the same amount of strength, knowledge, and wit. She's snarky as hell too. Kat is my greatest ally in life, and gave us a son that was wanted more than life itself by both of us. I always knew she would make a fantastic mother. We make a good team with our disparate interests and diverse commonalities. My wife is a superb cook, a hard worker, loves animals and has rescued hundreds. She is by far the most intelligent person I have ever known and puts me in check. I love her for all of these qualities. The good she has put into this world is immeasurable - she is everyone's go-to in time of crisis or need. It can't be easy - and I honestly don't know how she does it - or puts up with my bullshit. I've always felt blessed to be married to my best friend.
Kat is an anthropological linguist, and is superior in her field. She can pinpoint with accuracy where people of various languages were raised based on accent, vernacular, and speech patterns alone. Truly amazing. She has taught as an adjunct faculty member at YSU, following in her father's footsteps. Her father, Dr. John Robert White was professor and chair of the Anthropology and Sociology department at YSU for many years. Her teaching skills are profound, as were her dad's. He was, and would be, beyond proud of her.
Kat is a genius writer, and I could not have made this site without her editing skills and suggestions. So, a huge thank you to her for helping to make this happen! We've spent more than twenty years being there for each other and I hope for many many more. However, she does wish to suffocate the life out of me for the ninja photo...so we'll see if I make it!
You are a beautiful woman and an amazing wife.

Told you I'd get you one day with this photo ;)

My extraordinary son...what can I say?
You inspire me to be a better human every single day.
I expect great things from you, not just because I love you, but because you are smarter and better than me in so many ways already. You are the light of my life. You are a gift and blessing to the universe and will make that known by changing the world. I know it!
David John sitting in front of (worshiping) the "ball machine" at the Butler Institute of American Art. This is a piece by George Rhoads and is, by far, the best thing ever exhibited by a museum, in my son's humble opinion. He always sat tentatively waiting for the rare occurrence of the marbles hitting the drum element of the machine. Oddly enough, in our travels we have come across other kinetic sculptures by George Rhoads.
My mother, Alice, is talented and also has an artistic mind. She is a bright and strong woman. She has always supported my work and helped expand my artistic pursuits. She worked many years as an AutoCAD draftswoman, doing architectural and engineering work for several firms. I remember looking at large blueprints when I was younger that included giant plans for domed geodesic roofing of water treatment tanks, or giant iron-hooks rigged to ceilings of industrial plants meant to carry loads via pulley systems. This was cool stuff – designed with incredible skill, far beyond my mother’s pay grade. I awed at not only the technical drawing, but also her all-capital printed lettering that was, and still is, so clear, neat, and easy to read.
My mom planted the seed of me being an artist at a young age, and has always encouraged and supported my endeavors. When I was a sophomore in high school, she came up with the fundraising plan to make lithographic prints of my artwork to sell - funding a 3-week student ambassadorship trip to Europe. The People to People International Travel Program, envisioned and set up by President Dwight Eisenhower, was an immersive and spectacular learning experience. My group visited Spain, Switzerland, Germany, and France. It was an incredible experience that I am grateful to have had due to my mother. Combined with traveling with my grandmother at a young age, this trip set the stage for both the world travel and four cross-country road trips with my wife. This tradition has continued, as three of those trips have included our son over the years.
My mother has also given me the gift of having a step-father. Chris has been in my life for over twenty years now, and he has always been great to me. I know he doesn't always "get" me, but that's just because I'm related to my mom! Ha! Chris is a good kind-hearted person, and is always there for my mother and family. He once just handed over the keys to his dad's old farm truck to be abused for my hauling of scrap metal. Chris has a keen interest in cars and motorcycles, yet has one fatal flaw...he's a Pittsburgh Steelers fan! Eh, we forgive him, however, and I even painted a pretty cool Steeler's helmet for him in their garage. Admittedly, it was actually fun to do.
My mom has a great sense of dry humor, and we cracked each other up when I was younger, and still do. I love her ability to catch innuendo and inside jokes. She's a crazy hard worker. A little more on my mother and her mom, Mary Jane (my grandmother or "Bama"), and the influence they both had on me becoming interested in art and drawing at a very early age coming soon...

An accurate depiction of how my brain has felt while creating this website. My mom will get it. Ren and Stimpy!
My Dad has always been there for me and my sister Sarina. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for us, and we both know it, and have certainly appreciated it and taken advantage of it. A tree falls and knocks out our power lines on New Year’s Day, and he’s there with a chainsaw ten minutes later - that kind of there for you. I love him for that. He definitely has set the bar high in that area, and every time I wear my cliché “Best Dad Ever” shirt my son got me, I can’t help but think it should be MY father wearing it.
He and my stepmother Tina, put up with a lot of loud rock music being learned on the drums when I was in high school - although I think they kinda liked it - fans of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush and all. Hey, THEY bought that first drum set! Tragic.
My dad has always encouraged my artwork. He was a key part in the installation of my work for the BFA Graduating Show in 2009. He helped me hang and attatch the painted panels onto the walls of the McDonough Museum of Art to assemble an overall 20 x 40 wall painting. My dad is a hard worker and taught me that it often pays off in ways you didn’t even know it might, non-monetarily. It’s good to just sit back and enjoy something you’ve created, even if you can see the flaws with your own eyes, most people don’t catch that level of detail anyway.
My dad is a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan, and the things I’ve made to add to his “Brown's man-cave” have always been cool projects, especially his giant Browns helmet that I painted on the wall. If I ever hybridize a good orange, brown, and white iris flower, you can bet your ass it’s getting a name fitting to his level of fandom. Go Browns!
I've added a list of famous "Dave-isms" or "Dad-isms." I'll have to ask my sister for some help and whether or not it is appropriate. LOL (I/we can probably get away with it because he doesn't use the interwebs)
- "You can't always get what you want." ♫ (usually sung out like the Rolling Stones tune.)
- If you stub your toe or something of the like: "Hey, does it hurt? Doesn't hurt ME!"
- "I don't need any sugar in my coffee, I'm already sweet enough."
- "You listen with your ears, not your mouth."
- "If man was made to fly, god would've given me wings." (Despite having waited until his fifties to ever fly, he HAS done so many times since, and lauded the virtues of the expedient travel time.)
- "If you're feeling' froggy, then leap."
- "Show me an honest politician and I'll vote."
As big as the sky, dad!
Three David's (My dad, my son, and me)
Me, my dad, and sister.
My stepmother, Tina, has been in my life since a very young age. She’s given me endless support over the years, and is always into my art and what it has to say. She listens and knows me well, good and bad. Most of all she gave me my sister! My sister, Sarina, is a caring and proud Millenial with a lot of gumption. I could be considered a millennial too, but I fall into a small few years span known as Xennials. Much cooler...ha! Sarina Mauerman M.A., CF-SLP recently earned her master's degree in speech pathology and is going to do great things. I couldn't ask for a better sister. She's got a good head on her shoulders, and she is going to be successful - she already is.
It’s hard not to like my stepmother, Tina - she brings out the good in people and always sees them for more than what the average person sees. My dad and she have always had an “open” house policy. Meaning, they’ve taken in otherwise down and out friends and family multiple times. A homeless man Tina knew stayed at their house for a year and THEN stayed at an old residence my wife and I moved from, until it sold. (I once made a short photo essay about Ed, our adult autistic homeless friend, and his tragic life.) Anyway, the kindness we all tried to show Ed flowed from her original act of caring for his well-being, trying to help, and just doing the right thing.
On December 6, 2018 my stepmother’s mobile home burned in a tragic house fire. Of all people on this planet, she was the least deserving person to lose a home - especially after how generous she'd always been with her own home over the years. My high school buddy and bandmate even moved in our senior year and he lived at our home several years when he needed a place. Bonus for me! Anyway, Tina naturally came to our spare bedroom following the fire to recover emotionally and financially. A Kickstarter campaign was begun and after a family Christmas, with a household now full with an additional grandma, she soon began to rebuild. She is strong and has great will power. Tina eventually rebuilt her new home in the same spot/plot that she loved so much. She aptly nick-named it “Traylor Swift” - apparently there’s a new Taylor Swift video with a trailer burning - who knew? - I’m a Tool fan. Even though she’s a “Swifty”, along with my sister, she loves all kinds of music, and we recently went see Tool together for their 2019 “Fear Inoculum” tour. She’s a blast. She has watched the entire Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul series (plus El Camino) with my son and me, and we are currently enjoying getting together every Monday night to catch the new season. We love it!

Moving day for my sister. We look good for just packing a 16 foot truck for her move to Colorado!
Joanne is a fantastic human being. If you somehow missed it, she has an entire section of this site for her own artwork and much more! Visit Joanne'sArt to see for yourself.

Chick Pic, (2020) Acrylic on wood (12 X 6 inches) - Gift for Joanne on her 80th birthday. A little painting on a piece of scrap deck-board I had fun painting. We sure have been enjoying our new baby chicks.
My father-in-law was great and is greatly missed. A small tribute to him and his work can be seen here along with some of his extensive art/artifacts collection, as well as a few brief tributes to him from his good friend, and integral part of his dig crew, Chuck Mastran, and my good friend David Parker, a former student and friend of my father-in-law.
